One morning, I woke up to a Tweet from a very good friend of mine, Moonvald. And it just so happened that this went viral overnight. Gaining an incredible 2.4k likes, 126 retweets, and 275 replies. In short, it blew up!

I have been blessed enough to know Moon (as I like to call her) for a number of years within the Destiny community.

But for those of you unfamiliar with this incredibly talented individual, she has made many appearances over the years. The leader of popular gaming news initiative Planet Destiny, starred as Savathûn in My Name is Byf’s Dynasty video, and appearing as a guest in DCP Live (Destiny Community Podcast).

Okay! You get it! Moonvald is really well known in the community, but most importantly, extremely hard-working. On Thursday night, she shared a really positive note on her preference for the original Lightfall promotion art vs the new one.

If you scroll through the replies, you see a lot of well outlined, and flavoured discourse in agreement or disagreement. And it made me pause. I took time to really think about why I love Destiny, and just how much effort goes into promotional artwork.

There is always a narrative in all of Bungie’s press releases — Often having players taking a fine tooth comb to every tiny little detail.

But what stood out for me in this conversation was the balanced, and positive responses from Moonvald herself. It takes a lot to be open, optimistic, and balanced. Especially when it comes to being a gamer, and fan of the franchise on a whole.

There are many comparisons, but in my opinion this style or vibe (if you prefer) very much reminds me of Tron Legacy, and TMNT (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), why? Because the new armour set displayed by the Guardian hunter above fits into this theme.

Where did the apocalyptic vibe go?

It didn’t leave at all, it’s featured throughout all the information we’ve received from Bungie to date, about Neptune, and it’s city Neomuna.

If you look at any of the images shared in the Lightfall campaign web page on Bungie.net, or even within the teaser trailer, you will see a heavy emphasis on Emperor Calus, The Witness, and the Pyramid fleet featured everywhere.

And given the heavy nature of what the Darkness is all about. From a marketing perspective, one must sell the product in a way that is approachable to a wider audience, and they hook’em with an epic story of origins once you are in.

So! While I agree with Moonvald I can definitely appreciate the angle the team took in realizing their vision for Lightfall. No one wants to dwell in darkness or grit, or to be faced with the same problems we see in our everyday lives show up in an epic Sci-Fi adventure…or do they?

It’s okay to have opinions, but blatant disregard for other perspectives, and reasons why, can be destructive. Which can lead to a break-down in communication, rather than appreciation of the common interest.

With all that said! I am really looking forward to the conclusion of the “Light & Darkness” saga in Destiny, and there is no telling what may happen once we reach, that end.
